About Us

Our story

In 2014 CountryBoy Jiu Jitsu was founded by Matt Whyton. Now, 2nd degree black belt under his coach Andy Roberts, he has opened the home of Jiu Jitsu in Haslemere.

Matt has one simple mission: to build a space where anyone—regardless of background, age, or experience—could walk through the door, feel welcome on the mats and develop themselves, just as Matt and many others have done.

From the very beginning, the academy has been grounded in the belief that jiu-jitsu is more than just a combat sport, martial art or form of self defence. It’s a tool for transformation. For many, stepping onto the mats becomes a lifeline—a way to face life’s challenges head-on, build resilience, and find peace in the chaos. Jiu-jitsu teaches us humility, patience, discipline, and strength—not just physical strength, but the inner kind that helps us overcome adversity.

At Country Boy, there’s no room for ego. Everyone is on their own journey, and every roll is an opportunity to grow—win, lose, or learn. That mindset runs through everything we do, and Matt still leads by example every day, passing on the same values that shaped his own journey.

Today, over a decade after the name first came to life, Country Boy Jiu Jitsu finally has a home of its own. You’ll find us nestled in the heart of Haslemere, just a short walk from the station. Our academy sits inside a beautifully converted chapel—complete with wooden floors, vaulted ceilings, and stained glass windows—creating a unique and welcoming space to train.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned grappler, we’re here to help you get better with every roll. Come as you are. Leave better.
